Rim size codes explained
Every wheel carries a series of stamped codes. Once you can read them you can quickly judge whether a wheel suits your car.
Example: 6.5Jx16H2 ET35
| Code | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 6.5 | Rim width in inches (6.5 × 25.4 mm = 165.1 mm) |
| J | Flange type of the rim horn (J is the most common type on passenger cars) |
| x | Indicates a one-piece (drop-centre) rim |
| 16 | Rim diameter in inches |
| H2 | Hump type (raised bead seat to hold the tyre in position). H2 = double hump |
| ET35 | Offset of 35 mm |
Flange types (horn codes)
- J – Standard for passenger cars (horn height 17.3 mm)
- JJ – Slightly taller flange; sometimes used on compact SUVs
- B – Used on some Italian vehicles
- K / P – Trucks and heavy vehicles
Hump types
- H – Single hump (outer side only)
- H2 – Double hump (both sides); most common for tubeless tyres
- FH – Flat hump
- AH – Asymmetric hump
- SL – No hump; typical of older tubeless rims
Rim width and tyre size
Recommended tyre width depends on rim width. As a rule of thumb a 195 mm tyre fits rims between 5.5 and 7.5 inches wide. Check your car's exact specifications:
